Q&A / Lumini
What or who inspired you to start making music?
-
I started producing a few months after my uncle gave me a keyboard that he no longer used because he suffered a pretty severe stroke. It had an archaic 8-track recording system built into it that allowed me to experiment with making melodic loops with the presets and drum loops. From there I moved on to Ableton and started diving into the expansive world of lofi and electronic music because I had very little equipment besides a laptop, keyboard, and DAW.
Aside from lofi/chill beats, what is your favorite music genre?
-
Aside from lofi, jazz is definitely my favorite genre. I've played jazz trumpet for several years and it's what really made me decide I want to pursue music as a professional. I grew up in Rochester NY where there is a somewhat large jazz scene with the Jazz festival and also the Eastman School of Music (which I spent a lot of time at in high taking lessons and playing). Now I live near NYC which has been an even bigger inspiration to master my trade.
What is your creative process like when making music?
-
When I start a new track, I try to either expand on a sound I’ve worked with before or find a new tone to try out. Right now I've been really interested in dark ambient electronic music and also recorded piano. Luckily the two go together quite well so I've been able to stay eager in a genre that sometimes feels redundant. Once I get a stable starting point I build around the idea utilizing sounds familiar to me and my past releases.
