Q&A / J Fletch

What or who inspired you to start making music?

  • My initial inspiration came from watching Felly make beat videos on maschine in 2016-2017. The same day I discovered beat making, I fell in love with it and asked God for a sign if that’s what I’m meant to do. The very next day, I unboxed a skin in H1Z1 from a free crate that completely covered the cost for a mikro mk2! I’ve been all in ever since and use that moment as a reminder to keep pushing.

What is your creative process like when making music?

  • I first start with some basic chords to get the feeling I’m looking for. Next, I’ll work heavily on the drums as I find it easier to work more on the melodies once the drums are generally complete. And finally, I’ll spend a few days bouncing between other projects to refresh my ears and add final touches.

What is your favorite season and why?

  • My favorite season would have to be summer. I really enjoy the overall feel of the world being a bit more relaxed than usual as well as the nice warm weather!

What inspires you the most in your daily life? Why?

  • My main inspiration in daily life is the overall pursuit of growing and becoming the best version of yourself. I believe that everyone can become whoever they want to be, and that belief drives me each and every day to keep growing.

If you could tell every person in the world one thing, what would it be?

  • Be kind and uplift those around you.

Where do you feel the most centered and happy?

  • I’ve come to find that I feel most centered and happy not in a specific place, but when traveling somewhere new. I think knowing that there is so much of the world for me to see keeps me from feeling comfortable in the same spot for too long for better or worse.

If you could relive one moment from your life, which would it be?

  • I would love to relive my visit to New Zealand! Specifically doing the skyline luge in Rotorua.  Being somewhere so magical and far away from home felt so surreal and I really appreciate my high school for the experience. I highly recommend anyone in school with the opportunity to travel take it!

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

  • “The biggest difference between the one who “makes it” and the one who doesn’t is one of them quit”

If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Why?

  • I would really love to live in Thailand! Over the past year I have been obsessed with travel vlogs from different content creators there and have absolutely fallen in love with the country! Preferably I would have two home bases one there and one back here in the US but Thailand is the dream!

Aside from lofi/chill beats, what is your favorite music genre?

  • My favorite music genre aside from lofi/chill beats would be Hip-Hop. Some of my favorite and most influential artists in my life include Nipsey Hussle, Russ, and Felly.

What’s one thing about you that surprises people?

  • I have only just started to learn to play real instruments. For the last 5 years, I have programmed in all my sounds! I think that there’s only benefits to me learning an instrument and it’s long overdue!

What do you wish you could tell yourself five years ago?

  • Everyone’s journey is different, and the most beautiful gardens take a long time to grow. The quicker you stop worrying about anyone’s perception of you the quicker you find yourself.

In the last five years, what new belief, behavior, or habit has most improved your life?

  • @charlie did an amazing podcast with @producergrind on “retuning” your mind and “delusional optimism”. This podcast and message overall is something I’d recommend anyone to watch as it completely changed my life in not only in my career but my overall happiness and perspective on the world.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?

  • I would describe my music as “full song instrumentals”. I think this way gets across the point that the collaborators and I are the artists and it’s meant to be an instrumental.
