Q&A / Pangolin Dreams

What or who inspired you to start making music?

  • Many people at various stages. I grew up in a musical household, and my parents encouraged me to get drum lessons when I was 5. At school, I was surrounded by great musicians, and I had a brilliant music teacher who really encouraged me. I went to a contemporary music uni with incredible writers and producers.

What is your creative process like when making music?

  • Really depends on what genre I’m working on, and whether I’m stuck in a rut… I’m primarily a drummer and keys player, so I have the two set up at the studio so I can play out ideas with very little prep.

What is your favorite season and why?

  • Spring. Coming out of a cold bleak winter, and seeing the woodlands come to life, the temperature start to creep up, and the birds start to sing, it feels very joyful.

Where do you feel the most centered and happy?

  • Reading the bible, singing worship and spending time with prayer puts me in the presence of a loving, creating God, who does not change no matter what the rest of my life may look like that day, week or month.

If you could relive one moment from your life, which would it be?

  • Probably my wedding day, although I guess a day is quite a long moment, but it did fly by. It was an incredible day, and I also loved the evening music. We had so many musical people there, and so we had an almost modular band, with musicians swapping in and out, changing instruments, it was incredible.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Why?

  • It seems very boring, but where I live now! I’m so happy where I live, I wouldn’t choose anywhere else.

Aside from lofi/chill beats, what is your favorite music genre?

  • Choosing your favourite genre is always the worst question to be asked. If pushed, I’d probably say funk, but I love anything that crosses between that, jazz, soul and electronic.

What’s one thing about you that surprises people?

  • I sing for the children’s TV show ‘Tractor Ted’…

What do you wish you could tell yourself five years ago?

  • If I’m honest, I’d probably do a ‘Back To The Future’ style thing and give myself the lottery numbers.

In the last five years, what new belief, behavior, or habit has most improved your life?

  • I’ve got into a good habit of reading the bible, and it’s an unusual thing to say to any non-Christian, but it’s a genuinely amazing, eye-opening book with the most profound story.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?

  • Pangolin Dreams is an instrumental project full of relaxing music, soft, warm sounds and simple beats.
