Q&A / David Chief
If you could tell every person in the world one thing, what would it be?
-
Believe in yourself when nobody else will. I think this is important to remember that no matter what you do, people will judge you, doubt you, hate on you, etc. Do what makes you happy and never lose sight of your goals.

Where do you feel the most centered and happy?
-
There is something really special about being in the studio with other creatives and making music, or any type of art in general. Making music helps me forget about the stresses of the “real world”. Being in the studio is definitely my happy place.

What’s one thing about you that surprises people?
-
People are often surprised when I tell them I am a DJ as well as a beatmaker. I picked up DJing around the same time as making beats, and have sold out various events in my college town of Burlington, Vermont. I have opened for artists such as Talib Kweli, Dave East, and Waka Flocka Flame.

In the last five years, what new belief, behavior, or habit has most improved your life?
-
I think time management has been the most beneficial change I’ve made in my life lately. Any artist who also works a full-time job can probably agree that it gets difficult to stay creative after working a long day. Making a routine and sticking to it helps me stay motivated to keep creating new material.
How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?
-
I make laid-back beats that are best enjoyed outside, surrounded by lush greenery. I take a lot of influence from jazz and old-school hip-hop, and I want my beats to sound like the background music to a nice walk somewhere in nature.
