Q&A / Pete Mac

What inspires you the most?

  • I’ve always found a lot of inspiration & joy in the process of sampling, especially from vinyl. Digging through record crates and discovering new (old) music, layering sounds, textures, and different elements to create a whole new vibe. Lots of trial & error, but when an idea finally clicks it can be quite lovely. Collaboration is also a huge driver for me. I love opportunities to work on all kinds of projects with different people… and hearing someone rap over my beats is still the coolest feeling ever.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

  • I’ve sort of fallen in love with the idea of traveling and making home in many places. So, for the sake of this hypothetical situation, I would live in a huge RV with a built-in music studio and all the extras. Top of the line, luxury living on wheels. And I would just travel around with my cat, making music and experiencing the world. Maybe we’d start somewhere on the West Coast.

Aside from lofi/chill beats, what is your favorite music genre?

  • I enjoy the genres I typically sample from – soul, jazz, funk. I can get down with anything especially if it has a positive energy. There’s a Spotify playlist called “Feel Good Dinner” that I listen to often. That’s the music I usually want to listen to…tunes that you can groove to while jamming in the kitchen or something fun.

Where do you feel the most centered and happy?

  • Shooting around on a basketball court by myself. That might sound strange, but it really is quite peaceful. Some music playing on a beautiful sunny day while I practice half-court buzzer beaters? Can’t beat it.

What do you wish you could tell yourself five ago?

  • I’d remind myself to just enjoy the journey. I’m trying to stay more focused on living in the present. Ups & downs are inevitable so just relax and enjoy the ride, right? My advice to myself then (and now) is to stay consistent with the work, but also find peace knowing it’s never done or perfect. Enjoy the process!
